Travis

I created Kontrol Hockey as a passion project for my own use. I’ve always been a hockey nerd, constantly experimenting with knob styles and stick curves, trying to understand how each change affects performance. The size of your knob, whether you hang your pinky off; It all influences wrist mobility, grip, and how your stick lies on the ice. There’s always a tradeoff.

But I started asking a different question: what if you could adjust wrist angle during a shot, add grip without sacrificing mobility, or enhance control without altering your lie? That’s the concept behind Kontrol Hockey. I went through hundreds of designs before holding my first prototype which was 3D printed in my garage, with rods epoxied into the center. It took many iterations before I truly understood how to design a handle that improved performance without becoming a distraction.

The first time I used it on the ice, the level of control felt unreal. Like cheating. But not every player will prefer the same handle. That realization led to the idea of custom handles — giving every player the ability to fine-tune their stick to match their own style, just like I did.

When Travis came to me and proposed me testing out his original prototype, I was skeptical. I had experimented with manipulating my top hand grip with tape for years, however I would always revert back to the same variation, not trying to overcomplicate things. However, as an engineer myself and hockey nerd, the concept of being able to enhance my shot, handling, and overall stick skillset was too interesting to pass up. I have been aware of players manipulating wooden handles to tailor to their preferences. But being able to have a customized handle that could directly impact my shot and overall feel of my stick was eyeopening.

After trying the first iterations of Kontrol handles, I could immediately see the value. After using the handle, I saw improvements specifically in my shot power, as well as having a more filled out and effortless grip for improved feel when stickhandling.
